Ever since the first airing of a music video on MTV in 1979, bands and artists have been
broadcasting music videos. Television channels that were once based on popular music
news information, such as MTV, VH1, and CMT don’t air as many music videos as
they used to. However, these videos still get seen most commonly through the
rise of the internet. Some win awards and some are mocked, but listed below are
some of the most memorable music videos of my generation:
1. “Thriller” – Michael Jackson
A scary
Halloween-themed extended video of one of MJ’s top hits that won Album of the
Year
2. “Elastic Heart” – Sia
Maddie Ziegler, of Dance Moms,
stars in her 2nd music video of Sia’s alongside Shia Labeouf in a poetic
contemporary dance number
3. “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” – The Darkness
A British rock song performed
inside of a space station that gets attacked by a giant octopus; very
interesting to say the least
4. “Ass Like That” – Eminem
A
comedic video featuring puppets including Triumph, the infamous insult dog.
5. “Hotline Bling” – Drake
While it’s probably one of the most
boring music videos, the dance moves Drake performs have become grounds for
hundreds of memes
6. “Hey Ya” – Outkast
This Grammy award winning song for
record of the year has a video set in the 1960’s where Andre 3000 plays all the
characters of the video
7. “Stacy’s Mom” – Fountains of Wayne
This video made every teenage boy
wish they were the star in the music video which illustrates exactly the
thoughts that the song’s lyrics mention
8. “Yonkers” – Tyler, the Creator
The Odd
Future rapper eats a cockroach, that is all
9. “Last Friday Night” – Katy Perry
A nerdy character hosts a house
party with guests including: Hanson, Kenny G, Rebecca Black (from Friday), and
Corey Feldman, making me wish I was invited; won People’s Choice Award for music video of
the year
10. “Animals” – Maroon 5
Frontman, Adam Levine, models in a
bloody meat locker with his current wife; this video has been criticized for
being grotesque and gross
11. “Same Love” – Macklemore ft. Mary Lambert
Won the MTV VMA for best video with a social message and that message
is that gay rights are important; a very emotional and significant video
12. “Bound 2” – Kanye West
Kanye West sits on a motorcycle
with an extremely fake looking desert background, but the parody that James
Franco and Seth Rogen made is what makes this music video hilarious
13. “Here it Goes Again” – OK GO
I’ve probably watched this video a
hundred times trying to figure out how this band successfully shot this
choreography in one take on treadmills; Also won Grammy award for music video
of the year
14. “Heart Shaped Box” – Nirvana
An extremely controversial video
featuring Santa nailed on a cross and a KKK member; a trippy video that won the
MTV award for best alternative video and best art direction
15, 16, & 17. “Everytime” – Britney Spears , “Stole” – Kelly Rowland, “How to Save a Life” – The Fray
All 3 of these videos share a
powerful message about suicide and its aftermath
